A Translation Report On North Carolina Driver's Handbook

In recent years, with the rapidly construction of domestic inter-city highways, urban roads, bridges and other facilities, the way people travel has changed dramatically. However, national and local traffic laws and regulations are not fully matched, and people are still lacking in regulation consciousness. Therefore, China now is exploring more deeply as the demand for traffic laws and regulations translation grows fast. As the present translation market is immature and unprofitable, and is short of translation talents, there are few domestic translation practices and researches on traffic laws and regulations. Therefore, we have the necessary to study foreign regulations for motor vehicle drivers, so as to get their formulating experience and provide a reference on traffic laws and regulations for our country.The object of this project is North Carolina Driver's Handbook, which belongs to the type of traffic regulations text. The target is to deal with the shortage of domestic translation materials on traffic regulations, and provides professional information in the transportation sectors for lawmaking officers and important resources for teachers with students. This thesis also provides essential rules and regulations study materials for ordinary people. It can also accelerates the development of transportation and serves Chinese people much American translation information, and then helps us to improve the national travel quality.Traffic regulation English text uses formal, accurate and rigorous words, so the translation is difficult on some level. Combining with Nords' Text Analysis, this report mainly adopts Newmark's Text Type Theory with Semantic Translation and then explores the traffic regulations translation strategies and techniques. From the point of text function, illustrating examples of terminology, nominalization and long setences, this thesis anylazes text characteristics, language features, intratextual and intratextual factors of the text, and summarizes a translation skills and a small term bank.With this practice of English translation, I test my achievements of the learning in these two years, improve my translation ability greatly and deepen my understanding of translation. In addition, as a student majoring in English translation, I hope this thesis could provide some solutions to problems in the translating process and could also be helpful to teachers and students engaging in translation.
