In the twentieth century, as a famous modernist novelist, Kafka is worthy of a spiritual leader in that era, every piece of his work is the clarity presentation of his own inner world with no secret, his works are also known for arcane. The author believes that Kafka is a paradoxical man, his character is paradoxical, and paradox exits in Kafka’s works from beginning to the end.Firstly, the article explores the causes that form Kafka’s paradoxical character, "human and society’s paradoxical living circumstance","embarrassing national identity","the death of the understanding love in the family," "love tragedy’s catalysis"——this four aspects are discussed in this part. And "paradox" is reflected both in Kafka’s personality and artistic creation, and both of them are interrelated, his character and thought patterns directly affects his view on the world and the life, language is just the expression of people’s inner world. The second chapter of the article shows us the paradoxical factors in Kafka’s thoughts. One of the most typical features of Kafka’s personality is his high degree of self-division. His character is full of incredible paradox, Kafka disgusts his brutal and absolute father, but on the other hand, he desires for his father’s love, too. He regards writing as his full life, but tells his good friend to burn out all of his works after he dies, he hates to work in the insurance company, but always works so hard; he desires to get married, but makes the engagement and breaks off the engagement for several times. He just fluctuates between fear and desire, like a child, which ultimately leads to his mental breakdown, to his body and mind’s division. And writing becomes his whole belonging, becomes his way of self-redemption, becomes the only hope which makes him continue to survive. And by the way of writing, Kafka faces to death, turning into a fully-fledged art martyr. From the perspective of art, the third chapter of the article discusses the paradoxical factors embodied in Kafka’s works. Kafka shapes the absurd world and the absurd life, containing the truth of art. Through Kafka’s works, we will find that Kafka is good at using truth which is used to deduce absurdity, and this truth of art is more credible than the objective reality of the real life, and it is more convincing. While he is writing, Kafka often uses the humorous words to express his serious and horrific life experience. He often sketches out a picture of farce that makes people laugh. In his novels, Kafka is also good at combining the whole absurd and the true details, in other words, the whole plot of the novel is absurd, but the environment to accompanied the central event in the novel and many details is true, and people are familiar with them. Kafka controls the language of "light" and language of "heavy" easily, he often use the "light" words to express a "heavy" symbol. And in the tremendous tension between "light" and "heavy", Kafka leaves the reader infinite space to imagine and think.
