A Study On The Film Of Christopher Nolan

Since the 1990 s, American independent film career began to flourish, a group of talented young independent film directors came to prominence. The research object of this paper is the famous Hollywood film director Christopher Nolan who made his debut—an independent film "Following" on the world stage which was filmed during his student days. After that, he began his film career in Hollywood. From his debut in 1998, to his latest film "Interstellar" in 2015, Christopher Nolan directed nine commercial films. These films have a dual characteristic of artistic and commercial; moreover, they also have an excellent reputation in the world.Christopher Nolan has a strong innovation consciousness and enterprising spirit, thus his films have high ideological content which can dug in the human's consciousness and dreams and open a new field of vision for people. His films embody the new change of Hollywood commercial films. Nolan's films have a defined style that "Story is the core of the film creation". He found a mixed style of creation mode that combining his unique narrative technique with the classical Hollywood narrative structure, which opens the new change of commercial films. Nowadays, Hollywood movies come to a deadlock because of overused 3D effects, dogmatic characters and commercial type. The classic Hollywood movie narrative mode will not be worshiped crazily any more. As the innovative films directed by Nolan have been widely praised.In this paper, based on the development process of Christopher Nolan's films, combining the content and form of the films, we are trying to study his films in four aspects. The first part is an introduction of Christopher Nolan's growing background and his movies. A complete understanding of Christopher Nolan can help grab context of his movies. The second part summarizes the four distinctive features of Nolan's film by analyzing the development process and content of Nolan's films thoroughly. The third part focuses on profiling the form of Nolan's films, discussing the art techniques, characterizations, structural features, narrative constructions and technical aesthetics of his films with the example of some specific films, and then points out that Nolan's films have a distinctive personal style. The fourth part is intended to discuss the movie of the author's spirit and the integration development of commercial mode and art-house movie mode.The biggest problem in Chinese film industry is the disconnection between art and commerce, thus Christopher Nolan's films that are artistic and commercial and thoughtful can provide important reference for the Chinese cinema.
