As one big emerging industry in the 21 st century, big data has aroused a boom in China. Chinese government even makes “Big Data Strategy” one of the “Fourteen Grand Strategies” in the 13 th Five Year Plan. Also, it clearly states that “National Data Strategy” should be carried out to promote the sharing of national data resources. Therefore, given the current circumstances, the author translated Chapter Four and Chapter Five of Big Data Analytics: Disruptive Technologies for Changing the Game by Dr. Arvind Sathi and completed this report based on the translation. The original text belongs to computer science and it mainly introduces the basic concept of big data and the application as well as implementation of big data analytics. Meanwhile, aimed at spreading the basic knowledge of big data and providing enterprises with technological support, the text is rich in illustrations and pictures, typically professional, concise and with many long, complicated as well as passive voice sentences. The main task of the translator is to convey the content and intent of the original text accurately and make target-texts readers' responses similar to those of source-texts readers. Therefore, Nida's functional equivalence is strongly applicable in the guidance of this text. This theory emphasizes that translation should not be constrained by rigid corresponding of characters but to create functional equivalence between the target language and the source language, and convey the content and intent of the original text accurately. In light of Nida's functional equivalence, this report mainly analyzes some new words and terms, as well as flexible use of words at lexical level, and studies the translation of long, complicated and passive voice sentences at syntactic level. The entire report is divided into five chapters. Chapter One is the introduction. Chapter Two describes the translation task; Chapter Three discusses translation process, including task preparation and first draft, second draft, as well as final draft analyses and amendments; Chapter Four is case study. In this part, the author mainly analyzes 26 cases and comes up with several feasible ways to deal with the translation of this kind of texts, such as amplification, revision, omission and restructuring; Chapter Five summarizes this translation practice. This report is aimed at studying the translation of big data texts from the perspective of functional equivalence. Hopefully, this report will enrich the theoretical study in this field.
