This thesis explores and analyzes the culture-loaded words in Jeanne Larsen's Brocade River Poems: Selected Works of the Tang Dynasty Courtesan Xue Tao from the perspective of culture translation school. It aims at studying the translation characteristics and methods through analyzing, classifying and unscrambling the culture-loaded words in Larsen's Brocade River Poems. On this basis, this thesis discusses the losses and gains of the culture-loaded words in the translation of Brocade River Poems. Through the study of culture-loaded words of customs,culture-loaded words of allusions, culture-loaded words of religions and culture-loaded words of farewells, the main translation methods applied in translation of the culture-loaded words in Brocade River Poems are literal translation, literal translation plus annotation, free translation, amplification, corresponding and transliteration. In terms of cultural transmission, there are losses and gains in Larsen's translation process. Losses of Larsen's translation of culture-loaded words are losses of pronunciation, losses of meaning and losses of cultural imageries while the gains in the translation includes gains of meaning, gains of new cultural elements and gains of new words. As it is known to all, the emerging of American Imagism has played an important role in the translation of Chinese classical poems. Under this circumstance,Xue Tao's poems have been selected and translated to American and have certain influences in American poetic circles. Therefore, it is not only meaningful to study the English translation version of culture-loaded words in Xue Tao's poems but also important to explore the reference of culture-loaded words in other Chinese classical poems while translating and introducing them. Besides, Chinese government is advocating the “Go Global” strategy for culture diffusion so that it is of particularly significance to make researches of culture-loaded words while translating andintroducing Chinese culture, which is also the purpose of this thesis.
