A Practical Report On The Application Of Intertextuality In Translating My Life In Middlemarch

The theory of intertextuality plays an important role in producing and interpreting literary works. As a result, this theory makes an impact on the process and the quality of translation. How the theory of intertextuality works in accurate literary translation and how it affects the quality of literary works are the main research questions in the practical report. This practical report takes the prelude and the first chapter of My Life in Middlemarch which is considered as an intertextual novel by academic world as a practical text, dividing the translation practice into three chapters. The first chapter is task description, including the introduction of background, content, requirements, purposes and significance of the practical report; the second chapter is process description, including preparation, translation process, and readers'feedback and self-assessment; the third chapter is the central chapter of this practical report-case studies, studying the cases in the translation process to analyze and summarize the problem types in this translation practice, and analyzing the problems with the theory of intertextuality, then proposing concrete solutions and getting tentative conclusion. The practical report says that Middlemarch which was produced by George Eliot is an intertext of My Life in Middlemarch, that is why the translation of My Life in Middlemarch cannot be translated without understanding Middlemarch, no matter in relevant content, people's names or places'names; in addition, the application of intertextuality can improve the coherence and the convergence of the source text and the accuracy together with the readability of the target text.
