Over two thousand years ago, a trade route which passed through Asia and Europe; an important channel which promoted the exchange of the Eastern and Western cultures is known worldwide as the Silk road. Dunhuang, is a bright pearl on the Silk Road. Since the ancient days, artists have created many famous works employing Dunhuang as the theme.Furthermore, from the latter part of the previous century, using Dunhuang as the background or theme in music composition became a specialized field. “The Silk Road Fantasia Suite” being one of the productions. Since the Twenty-first Century, it has been a piece amongst the most influential in the Chinese National Orchestra. Composers employed the form of fantasia suite, and incorporating the wealth of expressions in a symphony orchestra, used the ancient Chinese instrument-- the Tartar pipe as the solo. Thus to express the ancient and mysterious Silk Road culture. “The Silk Road Fantasia Suite” is a composition which divides into the following five movements:1、“Farewell Chang’an”2、“Song of the Ancient Path”3、“Music of Liangzhou”4、“Loulan Dream”5、“Qiu Ci Dance”.This employment of National symphony to interpret Dunhuang theme, is rare even across China.So, this piece is significant in terms of innovation and exploration of Dunhuang music. Also, provides a positive guidance in the new compositions and dissemination of Dunhuang themed music.Finally, this article aims to analyze the composition “The Silk Road Fantasia Suite”. And through the analysis, to enquire into the appreciation of the composers toward the Dunhuang music culture. Also, by looking at the means of composition techniques and intention, to reach the objective of investigating the general traits of Dunhuang themed Chinese National Orchestra oeuvre.This article is divided into four parts, the first part is mainly for domestic fantasy suite "silk road" of the research status, and the author after a complete analysis and research to achieve the purpose and significance; The second part mainly introduces the development of the silk road music culture and the work of creation background and introduction of the author; The third part is mainly the analysis of the system about this piece of music ontology, including formal structure, instruments, harmony,mode, rhythm, polyphony, theme, etc., through the analysis of the work, the composer of the culture of dunhuang music comprehension, and creation techniques and creation intention, explore depicting the dunhuang general characteristics of Chinese national orchestral music creation; The last part is the conclusion.
