It has been two centuries since the appearance of Green's Fairy Tales in the year of 1812. As a great treasure of World Children's Literature, this book has witnessed the growth of generations of children from all over the globe. Hollywood has paid great attention to the adaptation of fairy tales all the time. Therefore, as a classic masterpiece, Green's Fairy Tales has been remade into different kinds of cartoon films as well as live action films for many times. Especially in recent years, people's attention and enthusiasm has been awoken again with the screening of some beloved masterpieces adapted from Green's Fairy Tales, such as Cinderella, Snow White and the Huntsman, Red Riding Hood and Maleficent. However, the domestic research about the adaptation of Green's Fairy Tales is relatively lagging behind. This dissertation uses the theories of narratology to explore issues about the cross-textual adaptation of fairy tales, the study subject are live action films adapted from Green's Fairy Tales.This dissertation is divided into four chapters. The first chapter scrutinizes and retrospectives the history about the adaptation of Green's Fairy Tales into live action films; and it aims to summarize the main features of the adaptation about Green's Fairy Tales of all stages, also, it scrutinizes the status of the adapted live action films carefully. The second chapter mainly discusses the genres of films adapted from Green's Fairy Tales. It summarizes both fairy tales' and films' transformation in characters and subjects through the analysis of the different types of adapted live action films. Using the related theories of narratology, the third chapter analyzes both the similarities and the differences between Green's Fairy Tales and the adapted live action films from the perspectives of narrative point of view, plot construction and narrative time. The last chapter is the case study of the "Snow White" theme which was chosen from different types of live action films. It makes a concrete analysis about the differences of the narration in the cross-textual adaptation from the perspective of the comparison among characters, the transformation of narrative perspective and the adjustment of plot construction.
