Though Chang Dai-Chien is renowned for his achievements in painting, his calligraphy might be better.Focusing on Chang's his calligraphy, this thesis conducts a research on his calligraphy and style. For the first, the study investigates the evolution of Chang's learning on calligraphy along his experience. In the early period,Chang is influenced by Zeng Xi and Li Ruiqing, two masters of him,so he imitated all the epigraphs from Han Dynasty to Tang Dynasty.Lines of a character are strong;the structure is tidy but free.Secondly, the study selects masterpieces of Chang and conducts a comparative analysis of his imitations and the original ones.It draws a conclusion that there are four periods in the evolution, viz.a)before 30,he is influenced by Li Ruiqing;b)influenced by Zeng Xi from 30 to 40;c)being proficient after 40.The “Dai-Chien style” which is of both regular script and cursive script was formed since then.d)After 60,both Chang and his calligraphy have grown to be matured.Besides, the study also compares Chang's painting and calligraphy,in order to unveil the inner-correlation between them.
