A Practice Report On Textual Cohesion And Coherence In Chinese Translation Of Master Services Agreement For GDCS

This article is a practice report on Chinese translation of English business contract,whose major concern is the use of cohesive device in business contract text and the reconstruction of textual coherence in the process of translation.With the integration and globalization of word economy,the International trade between Chinese and foreign enterprises are becoming increasingly frequent.The singing of business contracts is a vital part of International business activities,and the translation of business contracts is also receiving much concern.In order to do well in business contract translation,we have to understand the textual character of this kind of contracts,especially how they keep their cohesion and coherence.Based on the theory of cohesion and coherence put forward by Halliday and Hasan,this practice report analyzes the difficulties and problems of cohesion and coherence in Chinese translation of English business contract,explores the translation strategies and solutions.The main difficult points and problems found in the translation practice are the inconsistency of cohesive devices,the ambiguity of logical relationship and the differences between explicit coherence and implicit coherence.In order to deal with the inconsistence of cohesive devices,the solutions of reference cohesion,substitution cohesion and lexical cohesion are put forward.For the ambiguity of logical relationship,the solutions are the hiding of explicit relationship,the clarifying of implicit relationship and the adjustment of logical connection.For the differences between explicit coherence and implicit coherence,the solutions are omission coherence,division coherence and reversing coherence.Textual cohesion and coherence restrict with each other and correlate each other.They are closely bound up with other aspects of the text,so that there is a close relationship between textual cohesion and coherence.This practice report and case studies indicate that the translation of business contract texts under the theory of textual cohesion and coherence has a certain effect,which can provide certain implications to the translation of this kind of text.
