Philip Roth(1933-) is one of the most influential writers of contemporary literature in America. From “Goodbye, Columbus”, the collection of short stories,published in 1959 to the announcement of the end of in the end of 2012, Roth created a total of 33 works. Throughout Roth's works, “desire” is the key to enter the world of Roth's novel. His writing on people's desire was chosen after his gazing at Jewish's national destiny and observing the social life. The characters in Roth's works, driven by the desire, explored the meaning of the body and identity,questioning the modern living environment. This article comes directly from Roth's writing on human desire, in the context of large social history, and tries to show the possibility of Ross desire writing and the written content of desire.This thesis consists of an introduction, body and conclusion. Introduction section introduces the status of Roth in Contemporary American Literature and the world literature and the basic idea and the topic on this article. Body part comprises four chapters:the first chapter defines “desire” and desire writing in Roth's works.The second chapter analyzes the social and historical background of the desire of writing produced by Roth. Through the analysis of social and historical context to explore the underlying causes why Roth wrote desire. The third chapter is about manifestations analysis of Roth's desire writing. This chapter intends to exhibit the physical desire, identity desire and survival desire from of Roth's works to explain his desire writing. The fourth chapter mainly analyzes his writing features of desire writing.
