After the 1920 s, advanced technology promotes the combination and circulation between different disciplines, including painting arts. Diversified painting ideas make the boundaries between different kinds of painting blurry. The traditional Chinese lacquer painting is a cultural heritage produced in the context of Chinese culture. Oil painting, as a form of western painting, on the other hands attracts audiences through its strong performance. How to deliver author's thought, understand audience's inner feeling and aesthetic principles, and how to absorb various concepts, materials, and performance to recreate are three questions that require deeper study. Lacquer painting is a kind of painting use paint as the main medium and it mainly focused on material usage. Contemporary lacquer painting emphasis more on exploring new materials, and utilize other art forms' advantage to recreate.Oil painting and lacquer painting are two different art types, each has its unique artistic charms. From the developing trend of oil painting and lacquer painting, oil painting and lacquer painting take lessons from each other which enable the possibility of using new materials to transfer more ideas. The topic of this paper focuses on comparison between lacquer painting's and oil painting's different characteristics of material, application of materials, and visual effect, and discuss the complementary relationship between the oil painting and lacquer painting to find a new path in modern painting.
