Nowadays, more people have paid attention to art and music, which has encouraged deeper research into techniques of instruments.Particularly, violin has been favored for its beautiful tone and melody and more players have come to learn it,laying foundation to further studies.More studies and exploration have been conducted toward sound production theories and various techniques used in works. All these have paved way for the further development of violin-playing activities and related studies. This paper then focuses on the overtone of violin, analyzes the theories, practical application and training methods of the overtone of violin, and draws conclusions of relative rules to explore prospects for further research.Four chapters are discussed in the following paper:Chapter 1 concerns the development and application of techniques of the overtone. The historical development of the shape and structure of violin has been reviewed in this part.It is held that the change of the shape and structure of violin actually has exerted great influence on the overtone. The utilization of the overtone by earlier musicians who had conducted relative researches has been discussed then.Chapter 2 is about theories and rules of the overtone.By comparing the similarities and differences between physical vibration of string, and two types of the overtone(namely natural and artificial overtone),it is concluded and analyzed in this part the general rules of the overtone and the musical notation. The third chapter analyzes application of the overtone in practice.Diverse methods of expressing feelings and great charm of music are about to be discussed based on the analysis of the application of the overtone in Western and Chinese works. The last chapter summarizes the training methods and meanings of the overtone, including the overtone of monochord and double string,as well as natural and artificial overtone. What's more, relative potential problems, relative solutions and recommended textbooks are put forward to make it clear the importance of the overtone in playing violin.
