A Report On The E-C Translation Of The Gioconda Smile

Literary translation has long played a decisive role in the whole translation field, and especially, the translation of short stories is absolutely an important component. This report takes the short story The Gioconda Smile by Aldous Huxley as its source text. The author, taking Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory as her theoretical foundation, chooses three aspects respectively----word, sentence and style, and analyzes the corresponding adopted translation methods during the E-C translation process. The paper, based on Nida's translation principles and the characteristics of the source text, has analyzed and explained adopted appropriate translation methods combining with practical examples, such as literal translation, free translation, addition, annotation and so on. The ultimate purpose of the translation practice is to reproduce the content and style of the original text in the target language and the target reader can be affected in the same way as the original may have affected its first reader.The paper includes three chapters. Chapter one is an introduction to the author Aldous Huxley, the source text The Gioconda Smile, and the significance and structure of the report. Chapter two introduces the whole translation process, including preparation before translation and process control. Chapter three is the most important case study, which provides example analysis for the translation methods during this E-C translation process from three levels. One of the prominent features of The Gioconda Smile lies in the using of irony, especially the title of the source text is the biggest satire on the female leading role within. Of course, plenty of people's names and geographic names in the story, various rhetorical devices used within, and the description of dialogues among characters and psychological monologues all impress the readers very much. According to the translation principles of Functional Equivalence, the target reader should be affected the same way as the original reader eventually.The target text should conform to the standard of faithfulness, expressiveness and elegance and the translator should, during the process of translation, deliver the meaning of the source text and keep the style as well to the best of his abilities in order to make the report a sample for future's similar translation practices.
