Globalization has increasingly promoted academic exchange activities,so academic translation has become more and more important.Translation,Linguistics,Culture: A French-English Handbook(hereinafter the handbook)is an academic work on the theory and practice of the translation between French and English. This translation report is based on the translation of the excerpt of chapter two of the handbook. This chapter has coherent logic and fluent expressions, which contains lots of professional knowledge on linguistics, culture and translation that are features of this academic work.In the perspectives of Nida's functional equivalence,we analyze the cases from the lexical level, syntax level and textual level, and discuss how to translate nouns, special terms, headings, long and complicated sentences, and passage by the translation strategies such as literal translation and free translation, and other methods like addition, annotation, conversion, and split.Through this practical report,we find that in order to achieve the functional equivalence between the source language and target language, the translator should adopt literal translation and free translation, with a combination of other different translation methods. The report shows that the author has improved her translation ability and skills, even though there is still room for further training and improving.Besides, background knowledge is of great importance for the translation of such works. Finally, the translator hopes that this report can provide some reference for the future translation of similar works.
