The source text of the present translation practice is selected from Chapters Five to Seven of Peter Stewart Westwood's book What Teachers Need to Know about Teaching Methods, which was published in 2008.There are about ten thousand English words in the source text. Some mainstream teaching methods in the western countries are recommended and their effectiveness is also discussed deeply in this book.Under the guidance of Eugene Nida's functional equivalence theory, this translation practice uses various translation techniques to solve the difficult problems in the process of translation. As the educational text, the content of the book is characterized by many professional terms, long sentence structures with rigorous logic. The first task of translating educational texts is to be faithful to the original text,to be able to express it accurately through the target language, and to ensure the writing style of the source language. In order to solve the problems above, this translation practice adopts Eugene Nida's functional equivalence theory as the guiding principle, which firstly ensures the equivalence of content and then the equivalence of form in the translation.Different translation techniques, such as the conversion, addition and subtraction of words, the shift of voices of sentences, and the cohesion and coherence of the text, are used to ensure the representation of the style and content of the original text and the similarity between the original readers' feelings towards the original text and the target readers' feelings towards the translated text. This translation practice demonstrates the effectiveness of the Functional Equivalence Theory in guiding the translation of educational texts.
