Dry lacquer technique for sculptures has a long history.Because of its material properties,dry lacquer sculptures of Buddhism became popular and peaked in some historical periods.Due to Buddhism suppression movement,and other historical and cultural influences,the legacy of large sized(greater than or equal to the size of real person)dry lacquer Buddha rarely exists.It results in the blank of the study on historical dry lacquer sculptures.In this paper,we take the large sized China historical dry lacquer sculptures of Buddhism as research object.The first section of this paper is the introduction of dry lacquer technique and its historical development.In next section,we collect,categorize and depict existing large sized or medium sized(40-50 cm height)China historical dry lacquer Buddhism sculptures in museums or monasteries all over the world.The third section analyzes the dry lacquer techniques,style,features,and plastic arts of each sculptures,comparing with Buddhism sculptures made of other materials in the same period and similar style for case analysis.Finally,we conclude the dry lacquer technique's effects on preservation of Buddhism sculptures and its plastic arts.
