In the history of Chinese contemporary literature, Peng Yanjiao has a role of multiple identities. Firstly, he was a poet, one like Goethe who maintained exuberant creativity, with continuous transcendence in the realm of art. At the same time, he was also an essayist, critic, university professor, folk worker and achieved editor. In 1938, Peng began his creative journey, until his death in 2008. With 70 years of writing career, he could be said to have witnessed the growth and development of all aspects of contemporary Chinese literature. The creative work in the poet's later years and various kinds of literary activity, has exerted special influence upon the development of Chinese literature since the new period. But for various reasons, Peng did not achieve the proper status in Chinese literary history as a fit match for his contributions. With the deepening and improvement of the research of literary history,Peng' Yanjiao Phenomenon has gradually attracted the attention of some scholars so that the researches on Peng Yanjiao has entered a relatively popular phase. However most of the research is focused on the study of poetry and the poet, rarely discussing Peng as "organizers of literature and art", "folk workers" and other cultural identity, one who was engaged in all kinds of literary activities for the development of Chinese literature since the new period. With “the literary activities of Peng Yanjiao” as the basic starting point, this article carries on a specific combing various activities in literary newspapers and magazines, translation of foreign literary works and folk literature during Peng's life time, especially his engagement in planning of Poetry and Translation Garden, Two Poetic Circles, and Collected Translation of Prose and his service in The Wind of Chu Kingdom as the chief editor. It then deeply probes into the interactive relations between his literary creations and the work of translation and editing and folk activities. From his “position consciousness as the intellectual” to the “work of the poet” and his opening a new path in the creation of Chinese contemporary poetry, the author of this article reveals the correlation between Peng's literary activities and the development of Chinese literature in the new period. It attempts not only to promote the study of Peng Yanjiao in the direction of integrated, systematic development, but also to clarify theimportant factors in the development of Chinese literature in the new period so as to explore the inherent relations between the author's individual creative writing and literary activities and literary development of the age.
