“SuWuYaoMingLin”is not only a primary dictionary, but also is classified book. The book recorded thecommon people’s life in the early period of the Tang dynasty by classification, and were the real records of the grass-roots society in that time. Forthe practicability and social reality, the book had became important supplemental data that studied thecommon people’s life in the early period of the Tang dynasty. Through research, itmainly recorded thecommon people’s production and living in Tang Dynasty from the next four aspects:Firstly, a family of men tilling the farm and women weaving. It mainly recorded recorded grass-roots social ordinary people production and life style in Tang Dynasty. During the time, traditional family still was dominated by the Confucian concept of loyalty and filial piety, and the production and lifestyle still was the main form of men farming production and living forms outside and women bringing sericulture, reeling silk or weaving inside.Secondly, basic necessities of life and medical life. It mainly recorded the grass-roots society people’s production and life in Tang Dynasty from five aspects including in the daily dress, diet, living, transportation, medicine and so on. In the early Tang Dynasty, the country was strong and the economy was developed. In that time, the clothing of men and women deeply were influenced by the northern nomadic people. The clothing of men was simple and compact, the clothing of women was beautiful and big. In this period, the characteristic was women with the clothing of men. With convenient transportation, many foreign food and its species into the central plains, and were popular in a moment. Common people were separated to live in urban or rural areas, village construction wascomplete. And in domestic house, the function was complete, beautiful or generous. During this period, water and land transportation were developed; Residential and living areas were built in the whole city; Medicine was also popular by people during this period.Thirdly, business and wealth. For handicraft industry boom, common people were forced to engage in more complicated manual labor in order to adapt to the development of social productivity. Chinese and foreign trade was frequent, the bustling commercial trade makes the concept of wealth has changedduring this period.And with deeply influence of Buddhism in this period, the common people look“Qi Bao Buddhism” and the goods such as incense as household wealth.Fourthly, got animals and plants, andused water and fire. It mainly recorded the utilization situationabout getting plants and animals or using fire and water.Getting animal mainly displayed in: livestock, breeding or catching birds, huntingbeast, catching insect, and fishing activities. Getting Plants mainly displayed in:cutting wood, cuttingbamboo, collecting grass three aspects. Through to get the animals and plants, common people could gain not only rich meat food, also could meet the use of daily household,wood, grass artifacts. Breeding or hunting animals andcutting or collecting plants also could accumulate substantial wealth, and became a certain means that people made a living by mountain. For common people, Fire and water were necessary thingsin everyday life. In the using process of fire and water, people not only summed up the river and irrigation, and made full use of fire to make all kinds of food.During this period, Buddhism gained a rapid development.Under the guidance of the government, in the grass-roots society universal words atmosphere had risen. With the influence of the atmosphere,“SuWuYaoMingLin” was produced. The book specially recorded contemporary social life affairs that people payed attention on. For its common characteristic, peoplelearned and accept it. Then, it becamepopular textbook that people learned language knowledge under the Tang Dynasty official“words”.
