Materials, just as the name implies, is a material for teachers to do the teaching work. And the textbook plays an important role in the application of all classes, including the English course. Selecting and using appropriate coursebook is the essential prerequisite for finishing teaching tasks, achieving teaching purpose and getting a better teaching results at last. The high-level and high-quality coursebook plays an active role in promoting teaching work of teachers, stimulating the learning interests of students and advancing the whole teaching process. New Vision College English is consist of three series of different books, which are Basic Course (2Books), Viewing Listening and Speaking (4Books of VLS) and the four books of Reading, Wrting and Translation (RWT) separately. Whereas the author will choose the RWT textbooks as a research model to have a detailed and further study. This series of college English coursebooks is considered to be a "freshman" in this field, and is mainly provided for the students from universities, independent colleges, and higher vocational colleges. This paper tries to investigate the pedagogical and practical value of NVCE.The research results will be dedicated to answer the following questions:1.What are the advantages and disadvantages of New Vision College English?2. Whether this set of textbooks are used well or not by students and teachers?3. What are the ways to improve the material through investigation and study?4. What are the evaluation and thoughts of English learners on this set of textbooks?This research is carried out based on Cunningsworth’s evaluation standard, including impressionistic evaluation and in-deep evaluation. The paper is focused on the aspect of usage evaluation of the NVCE. Though the ways of doing evaluation questionnaires by students, this paper attempts to evaluate NVCE from the aspects of layout and design, language materials, language skills, activities, methodology and overall evaluation with the aid of data analysis tools. The results tell us:1. There are many advantages of NVCE, mainly showed in following five aspects:Firstly, authentic and abundant language input. Secondly, vivid and vigorous layout and contents. Thirdly, useful training in skill-developing, especially in reading, writing and translation. Fourthly, a appropriate degree of difficulty, which is more likely to suit for the undergraduate students suffering a inferior English basis. Fifthly, Riches in a lot of cultural knowledge and enjoys a favorable teaching result. However, there are also five respects of shortcomings:(1) Shortcomings in the training of listening and speaking skills.(2) Shortcomings in the activity design about cooperative learning models and group discussion.(3) Lack of concrete explanations to the grammar or language points.(4) CD and on-line resource attachment lying idle.(5) Lack of suggestions on learning skills and strategies offered to students.2. According to the survey, the using condition of the NVCE is quite well, and enable to help students to improve their English learning abilities and enlarge cultural knowledge.3. From the analysis of questionnaire’s results, the author summarizes and proposes fourteen modificatory recommendations, including four suggestions for teachers and ten suggestions for compilers.4. Generally speaking, the users of the NVCE hold a positive and satisfactory attitude. Most of the students agree that NVCE indeed help them to improve their English, especially the abilities of reading, writing and translation. What’s more, it expand their knowledge, stimulating their interest in learning, however, every man has his faults, there are also exist many shortcomings in NVCE that need a further improved and revised.Based on the analysis of the textbooks and the survey on students, the author puts forward some suggestions for the improvements of the textbooks. It is hoped that the study can provide some useful advices and references for textbooks editors, and the author also hopes that it can offer some valuable suggestions for teachers to better utilize and adapt to the textbooks.
