A Project Report On The C-E Translation Of Measures Of Jiangsu Province On Administration Of The Advertising Facilities Along Expressways

This report chooses Measures of Jiangsu Province on Administration of the Advertising Facilities along Expressways as research text. Through the analysis of major issues and difficulties during translation and illustration of various solutions to difficulties, this report aims to summarize the principles of translating legislative text and the methods to translate non-subject sentences and long sentences in Chinese legislative text.The C-E translation of the Measures of Jiangsu Province on Administration of the Advertising Facilities along Expressways is a project carried out by the Legal Affairs Office of Jiangsu Provincial Government. The language of this project features preciseness, authoritativeness and prescriptive. On syntactic level, declarative sentences and complex and long sentences are frequently employed.The major issues and difficulties in translating this project lie in the translation of specialized words in the field of advertising and expressway, translation of legal terms and expressions with Chinese characteristics, and the proper rendering of non-subject sentences and long sentences. By searching official websites and referring to parallel texts, this report explores the solutions to the difficulties mentioned above. First, the translation of professional words should follow the principle of accuracy and consistency; Second, the translation of expressions with Chinese characteristics should follow conventional expressions; Finally, the translation of legal terms should obey the principle of standardization. Meanwhile, this report investigates three methods to deal with non-subject sentences, namely, adding a subject, as an adverbial clause and as a passive voice. In dealing with long sentences, this report mainly adopts the method of splitting.C-E translation of legislative texts not only calls for certain legal knowledge, but also a good command of translation skills. This report analyzes and summarizes the major issues and difficulties in translation with an effort to provide certain reference meanings for translation of local legislative text in the future.
