With the deepening of economic globalization and expanding of international exchanges, there have been more and more foreign engineering projects. As an important constituent of project management, plant engineering contracts play a crucial role. Their translation involves wide knowledge in such fields as law and engineering, which is of practical guiding significance. Therefore, it is necessary to explore the translation of plant engineering contracts.Register theory is a core part of systemic-functional linguistics and has been widely applied to translation studies. Based on the framework of register theory, the translator can grasp the relationship between the register features of contracts and translation. Thus the translation quality can be improved and disputes can be avoided.Combined with specific translation examples collected during the author's internship, this report is meant to explore the translation of plant engineering contracts from the perspective of register theory. By analyzing major issues and difficulties from lexical and syntactical levels, useful translation strategies are suggested. The study shows that the register theory is applicable to the translation of plant engineering contracts. In order to represent register features of the source text, the translator should seek for the equivalence of field, tenor and mode in the target text. The author hopes that this report can throw light on the further study.
