Ancestral hall culture is one distinctive part of Chinese traditional culture, it has abundant connotation, lots of characteristics, and high historical artistic value. Researching on ancestral hall helps us to understand and appreciate the architectural-ornamental art of ancient times, and also helps us to have a deep understanding about the historical background and human thought of the past society. Firstly, this thesis did a elaboration on the architecture, ornament, cultural consciousness and main functions of Wan' an ancestral hall. It tried to present Wan' an ancestral hall cultural feature and give prominence to its characteristics by layer upon layer dissecting from external shape and internal consciousness of Wan' an ancestral hall. Then, the thesis did a dissertation on Wan' an ancestral hall's change during the crucial time in nearly half century, and discussed its meaning in modern times. At last, the article expounded its problems in the heritage protection, and did the reflection on these problems.Actually,Wan' an ancestral hall culture is also Chinese ancestral hall culture microcosm. The article tried to explain that ancestral hall culture still kept some active meaning and played an important role in today's rapid economic development and dramatic changing of society. Especially, in the time of urbanization movement and new socialist countryside building, we could not ignore the protection of traditional culture. The government and people should be objective, correct and active to regard ancestral hall, even they should take some scientific and efficient protection measures.In the introduction of this article, it analyzed the research of ancestral hall,and defined the concerning concepts clearly in order to comply with the intention of article, based on assimilating previous research. In chapter 1, it roughly described geography, history and ancestral hall of Wan' an.And it analyzed the causes of Wan' an ancestral hall in history, to prepare for the researching. In chapter 2, it emphasized on analyzing the architecture and adornment of Wan' an ancestral hall. Ancestral halls are cultural works that combining traditional building techniques,wisdom and ethics. And adornment is the full revelation of traditional ornamenting-skills and folk connotation. In chapter 3, it pointed out four main kinds of cultural consciousness, concluded patriarchal consciousness, clan belonging consciousness, ancestor worship consciousness, geomancy consciousness. The consciousness is throughout ancestral hall and its activities, and they had merged. In chapter 4, it dissected the main function of Wan' an ancestral hall. Its function had been changed with the era progress and social development. The traditional function has become weakened, but secular function has become strengthened. These chapters' analysis could excavate traditional cultural connotation and thoughts from the ancestral halls. In chapter 5, it analyzed the hall's changes during the crucial time in nearly half century. These changes didn't only conclude the hall's external change,but also its changes in function,standing, people's attitudes,etc. Otherwise, this chapter also analyzed ancestral hall's meanings and function in nowadays. In chapter 6, it pointed out the problems in the ancestral hall culture protection courses,such as the government's lacking in attention, villagers' weak culture sense and shortage of funds. Side by side, it gave some thoughts and countermeasures,but to handle the ancestral halls' essence and meaning is the key to the protection.Nowadays, the economy and society are always changing.There are so many problems that traditional culture is facing now to be solved. It is necessary to protect the positive contents of ancestral hall culture.
