On Translator's Subjectivity In Rewriting Theory:A Case Of The Politics Of Chinese Language And Culture

Translation is, of course, a rewriting of the original text. The purpose of rewriting the original text is to make Chinese readers obtain professional knowledge from source text. Since rewriting needs the translator to exert his or her subjectivity, this strategy applied to translation process under the Rewriting Theory is to achieve the maximum equivalence between the source text and target text.This translation report is written under the guideline of Rewriting Theory and the strategy of Translator's Subjectivity. The translation task is entrusted by a group of postgraduate students majoring in Chinese politics and culture. The translator applies the strategy of exerting her subjectivity under the Rewriting Theory and employs some methods to provide a more professional target text.Exerting Translator's Subjectivity is a good translation strategy and there are four aspects of important information that the translator needs to pay more attention to:diction, names, quotations and structure. For the diction of translation, the translator can adopt some precise expressions from related Chinese classic articles. Moreover, when translating the words describing people's characters, the expressions of parallel figure's characters in Chinese version can be directly used. In the translation of the people's names as well as quotations that might be unfamiliar to target readers, the method of annotation is often preferred. Belonging to two different families of languages, English and Chinese are different in many ways. English sentences have more passive voices,while Chinese sentences have more active voices; English sentences prefer the use of nouns, while Chinese sentences tend to use more verbs. All these differences require that translators should make some adjustments in terms of sentence patterns.
