Museum is an important carrier of socio-historical culture, which offers a space of discipline integration and exchange as well as an important functional place of enlightening the present, understanding the past and thinking about the future, thus opening all sorts of knowledge doors for people of different age, occupation and educational background. At present, there are a large number of museums in China with a huge quantity of collection treasures, and a lot of museums are still under vigorous construction every year with the support of Chinese government. Museum is a whole formed by activities such as cultural education exhibitions and its basic social functions include exhibit collection, cultural education, academic research, etc. In the 21 st century, with the rapid development of information technology, mobile communication technology, big data, cloud computing and Internet of Things have gradually risen and developed and new digital media technology has emerged. In the new museums under vigorous construction, digital media technology plays a very important role as one of the most important expression means in museum exhibition design. Compared with the traditional exhibition form, digital media as an efficient means of full sensory communication is more intuitive and vivid in the interpretation and dissemination of exhibition content. In the process of using digital media for exhibition, the traditional exhibition form of material object exhibition items plus text and picture illustration achieves a breakthrough, the expression intensity of exhibition effect gets strengthened, and the dissemination and communication of theme-based information gets enhanced, which helps to improve the interest, interactivity, participation and vitality of exhibition, enrich the audience's experience, and motivate the audience's enthusiasm for exploration, thus injecting the vitality of a new era into exhibition.However, digital media is both familiar and unfamiliar in museums at this stage, the root reason for which is that many digital media exhibition items that have been put into practical use often demonstrate barely satisfactory effect, which not only undermines the overall effect of museum exhibition, but also is not conducive to giving full play to the social education function of museums. This study will summarize the basic principles of and requirements for digital media design in museum exhibition design as well as the advantages and limitations of making rational use of digital media technology for a proposed museum through a lot of document retrievals, case studies and design practices, and finally design a new set of two-dimensional plus three-dimensional innovative digital media linear architectural space to fit the theme and socio-cultural education function of museums in order to test the practical effect of theory.
