E-C Translation Methods Of Parenthesis In The Short Story “Jemima Shore At The Sunny Grave”

Short story “Jemima Shore at the Sunny Grave” was written by English writer Antonia Fraser. Lady Antonia Fraser earned bachelor's and master's degrees in history at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford. She turned to crime fiction with Quiet As a Nun in 1977, the first novel about Jemima Shore, one of the first and most successful sleuths to come from the world of broadcast journalism. This sleuth story “Jemima shore at the sunny grave” describes a British television presenter who came to a remote island, bow island. Jemima wants to product a special TV program to show the local conditions and customs of bow island, and especially introduces the Archer Family which ruled the bow island for a long term before liberation. However, Jemima Shore was involved in a plot of killing. This story mainly described what Jemima had seen and heard in the bow island; the special natural scenery and local conditions and customs of the bow island; the different characteristics of the people in bow island and foreigners.Parenthesis are widely used in the story, according to figures, 173 parentheses formed the unique language style. This thesis defines the parenthesis and points out the function of parenthesis. It classifies the parenthesis into three functions: Cohesive function, Rhetorical function and Modal function. The function of cohesion in discourse is mainly about speeches and languages in sentences are linked to each other and restrict each other, the parenthesis can be used to act as the conjunction in the discourse. At this point, the parenthesis performs the function of the discourse cohesion, keeping discourse coherence and logical. Besides, parenthesis can enhance the expressional power of discourse, and attach certain stylistic colors. What's more, “interpersonal function” refers to the language used to express the speaker's identity, status, attitude, motivation, and the things of inference and express the speaker's experience and inner activities. Speakers participate in a situational context through interpersonal function, to express his attitude and inference, trying to influence the attitudes and behaviors of the hearer. Finally, the thesis points out the E-C translation methods of short stories about the parenthesis: Sentence-head method, Insertion method, Embedding method, Sentence-splitting method, Recombination method and Inversion method. Of course, the translation methods are not immune to but subsume each other.
