A Report On The Translation Of The Fat Woman's Joke(Excerpts)

The translation material, The Fat Woman's Joke, was written by British feminist writer Fay Weldon. From the angle of marriage and family, it sets out a series of stories which happen to the heroine after she is forced to go on a diet. Through these stories, the novel gives a full expression of woman's confusions and struggles in marriage, family and social life and questions the mainstream values of the patriarchal society.In light of feminist translation theory, translation is not simply language behavior but also culturally manipulative one. According to Sherry Simon, fidelity is to be directed toward neither the writer nor the reader, but toward the writing project, a project in which both the writer and the translator participate. It puts emphasis on translation's difference and translator subjectivity. In the process of translation, the translator is allowed to adopt various translation strategies to intervene the text so as to show clear feminine consciousness and make the feminine visible in the text. And Flotow put forward three main feminist translation strategies, i.e., supplementing, hijacking and footing and prefacing.This translation report consists of five chapters. Chapter one begins with a description of the translation task. Chapter two introduces the whole translation process. The third chapter introduces and elaborates on the framework of the feminist translation theory. Chapter four is case analysis where, mainly with the strategies of supplementing, hijacking and footnoting put forward by previous scholars, I demonstrate how feminine consciousness is reconstructed in the translated version. The last chapter summarizes my findings and presents the limitations of the present report.
