An Analysis Of Feminist Consciousness In A Frolilc In The Snow From The Perspective Of Feminist Translation Theory

Before the emergence of feminist theory, translation theory and practice seemed to have no relationship with gender. However, the truth is that gender and translation have long historical and social relations. In traditional translation studies, translation was considered as "les belles infidels", translation and female both possess the marginal and secondary position. The cultural turn in 1980s has pushed the combination of feminism and translation studies which formed feminist translation theory with Barbara Godard, Luise Von Flotow and Sherry Simon as the representatives, aiming to criticize the traditional concept which put females and translation at the bottom of the society. Such theory has provided a new perspective and shed new light on translation studies, pointing out the gender metaphors in translation studies, redefining the conventional notion of fidelity, emphasizing translator's subjectivity and regarding translation as an activity of rewriting. In feminist translation theory, translators need not be faithful to the author and the source text, but be obedient to the writing project in which the author and translator both participate. Translator and the writer, translated text and the original text should enjoy equal status. To realize such feminist ideas, Feminist translators adopt interventionist translation strategies, such as hijacking, supplementing, prefacing and footnoting, to make female images emphasized.Feminist translation theory was first introduced to China by Professor Zhu Hong, which has generated great influences on Chinese female literature and translation studies. However, due to different social, historical and cultural backgrounds, western feminist translation theory goes on a slightly different way here, and the domestic researches on this field still stay at the primary stage. Therefore, in order to push the domestic development of feminist translation theory, it is rather meaningful and necessary to study Chinese translators'translation works from this perspective.This thesis adopts A Frolic in the Snow as case study, which is compiled by Professor Zhu Hong, a famous domestic female translator devoting herself to introducing Chinese female literature to foreign readers and letting them hear Chinese female's voices. A Frolic in the Snow compiles more than twenty contemporary female writers'essays and the translated versions, some of which are translated by Zhu Hong, such as Gathering Wheat, Men and Women, Women and the City, Are Women "As Good As Men "? and Unlike a Dream, etc. This thesis firstly analyzes Zhu Hong's translation process which has been guided by her feminist consciousness, finding out that the translator has shared an invisible feminist writing project with the authors, translator's subjectivity is also emphasized, and translation is taken as an activity of feminist rewriting in the translation process. Besides, there are three translation methods adopted by the translator, including supplementing, omission and alteration. Those translation methods have been influenced by feminist translation theory to some extent. Therefore, discussed from Zhu Hong's translation process and her translation methods, this thesis comes to the conclusion that feminist consciousness has been displayed, and her translation practice has been guided by feminist translation theory.Hopefully, feminist translation theory will draw more and more domestic scholars'attention, and it is firmly believed that the localization of feminist translation theory in China will be more mature and deepened in the future.
