Hu Xiaoshi is a typical scholarly calligrapher in modern China. His profound knowledge, distinctive calligraphic arts and creative calligraphic tertiary education are praised by later generations. In terms of the calligraphic creation, Hu Xiaoshi is involved in all-round aspects, but the most characteristic contribution is his “stone stele stylistic running script”, especially its lines of Zhuan and Li as well as the side pen of north tablet make it a higher artistic value. During the journey of inscription rubbing, in spite of having many deficiencies, the combination of Tablets and Copybooks reaches prominent achievements. Hu Xiaoshi's specific calligraphic experiences and his distinct opinions about calligraphy produces positive influence on the study of calligraphy in modern times. This thesis will analyze Hu Xiaoshi's calligraphic arts from four aspects. Chapter One is to present his calligraphic experiences which can be divided into three periods: inheritance, development and maturity and to summarize his calligraphic experiences by analyzing the works of these three periods. Chapter Two is to explain his artistic style by analyzing his typical stone stele stylistic running script, seal script and official script. Chapter Three is to explore his calligraphic opinion by analyzing his calligraphic literature review. The chapter extracts Hu Xiaoshi's great contributions to calligraphy and concludes some enlightenment towards the current calligraphy by retrospecting his calligraphic experiences.
