Lu Chen was admitted into Central Academy of Fine Arts in the 1950 s and learned arts directly from Jiang Zhaohe, Ye Qianyu and other Chinese painting masters that belonged to the 20 th century. According to his artistic experience, he inherited and carried forward the traditional realism of Chinese painting, and considered the modernization of Chinese painting in the early days; later, he began to explore a new way for ink and wash performance by making lots of researches on art practices and theories. Overall, Lu Chen tried to integrate Western modern artistic ideas with Chinese painting theories artistically, and proposed the concept of “ink-wash formation” in teaching, reforming the basic teaching of Chinese painting.“Ink-wash formation” is an artistic theoretical result of deep theoretical researches and lots of art practices carried out by Lu Chen, aimed at improving the basic teaching of Chinese painting, and researching form laws and rules to develop students' creative capacities. For that, he used the Western concept of formation for reference. In short, he integrated Bauhaus' principle of plane formation into Chinese painting and combined the ink-wash lines of Chinese painting with the Western theories of formation.This paper mainly summed up the three stages of Lu Chen's artistic experience, analyzed his representative works at each stage, summarized his major artistic ideas, and then made an analytical study on ink-wash formation proposed by him. In a word, the paper fully expounded and researched Lu Chen's artistic experience, artistic ideas and original creation “ink-wash formation”.
