TPRS pedagogy is founded by Blaine Ray,an American Spanish language teacher inlate 1980s.Its full name is Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling.Compared totraditional teaching method,TPRS weighs more the significance of comprehensible input andthe interestingness of learning material.At the same time,reading is also considered a veryimportant source of comprehensible input.Over 2 decades,more and more language teachersproved the effectiveness of TPRS during their teaching practice.Corresponding research studiescontinuously enriched and developed the connotation of TPRS.In recent years,Chineselanguage teachers and researchers have started focusing on TPRS practice research in Chinese.During my teaching internship in Confucius Institute at University of Hawaii at Manoa,Idid lots of theory study and research in TPRS pedagogy,afterwards I applied TPRS in my class.After one semester of TPRS Chinese teaching,I proved the effectiveness of TPRS method inChinese language teaching in keeping students' learning interest and skill training in listening,speaking,reading and writing by analyzing students' final reports and questionnaires.This thesis comprises six chapters.The first chapter is introduction,which discusses the research background,the bringing ofthis research,and the goal and meaning of this research.Chapter 2 introduces the overview of TPRS including theoretical basis and teaching mode;the research development in foreign language teaching and Chinese language teaching.Chapter 3 is the pre-phase analysis of applying TPRS in elementary Chinese class inConfucius Institute at University of Hawaii.Mainly about the general situation of elementaryChinese class in Confucius Institute at University of Hawaii,and the attitude of and usingsuggestions from TPRS Chinese teachers which provided a bunch of supports to my study.Chapter 4 is the application of TPRS method in my class,includes teaching preparations,teaching steps,basic principles and a case of my class.Chapter 5 analyzed the effects of application of TPRS method in my class based on in-class tests result and questionnaires.Chapter 6 is a summary of this thesis,as well as some advices and suggestions from author.
