Ang Lee is the director who uniquely acquired Oscar Academy Award for Best Directing among ethnic Chinese so far.His unique literati qualities and culture connotation combined Chinese and Western feature allow him to perform well in Eastern and Western world and between tradition and modernity.Both Chinese and foreign films directed by him impressively express personal emotion and exploit the deep desire of humanity.This thesis is to make a study on Ang Lee's films based on tradition and modernity through applying film theory and literature search,and also on how Ang Lee to seek the communication and identification between traditional and modern culture by analyzing its theme,character and audio-visual language.The full thesis mainly including three chapters as follows:Chapter 1: Discoursing the theme construction under dual view.Section 1: deeply analyzing the conflict source of family ethical issues between Eastern and Western in Ang lee's films,and interpreting the meaning of family relations and family culture based on the core of family.Section 2: mainly describing the heterosexual and homosexual love in Ang lee's films and then analyzing his romance world.Section 3: studying the issue of love and hatred as well as life and death in Ang lee's films in terms of humanity view.Chapter 2: analyzing the characters in Ang lee's films on the basis of restriction and freedom,including farther figure with traditional idea and self-centred desire,and female figure with enduring intellect and rebellious sensibility.Chapter 3: interpreting the audio-visual language in Ang lee's films and analyzing its unique “Chinese-style Westernization” through its picture composition,color and voice.
