The Research Of Yorgos Lanthimos’s Films

The Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos’s films mostly appeared after the economic crisis of Greece,which made his films are closer to social issues and real life.The director is good at digging deep into human nature and profoundly arousing audiences’ thinking through the works.The metaphor is Yorgos’ s aesthetic principle,his films present as a surreal and absurd style,he uses the unique and weird film language to construct unusual dystopian film worlds.In this paper,I will regard the six existing films of Yorgos as the text to analyze,and I will do the research from the following four aspects,the theme of the films,the narrative strategy and the audio-visual language.Through the comprehensive study of Yorgos’ s films,I will get a conclusion of the Yorgos’ s film style.In the introduction,I checked the current domestic and foreign researchs of the director and his films,totally grasped the research results of Yorgos,that are the foundation of this research.In the first part of this essay,I analyzed the social context of Yorgos’ s works,and the influence of the director’s own experience on his creations,these are the factors that influenced Yorgos’ s film style.In the second part,I analyzed the theme of Yorgos’ s films from different angles,and founded that Yorgos always focuses the film lens on various classes of people,including the ordinary citizen,the middle class and the nobility etc.He reveals social realities,for instance,he criticizes totalitarianism,satirizes modern civilization,and exposes the hypocrisy and complexity of human nature.In the third part,I analyzed the narrative strategy of his absurd films,and draw a conclusion that its narrative space,character setting,and the use of metaphors are unified with the overall absurd and surreal style of the films.Finally,in the fourth part,I focused on the audiovisual language of Yorgos’ s films,founded the uniqueness of his audio-visual language.
