Ancient villages reserved until today, represents not only the traditional architecture itself, but also a physical material symbolizing social productivity forces in the very place that is rare and intangible. However, with the speeding up of urbanization and driving force of the policy of building a new socialist countryside, the contradiction between protection of the ancient dwellings and construction of a new countryside becomes more and more prominent. The traditional architecture style and simple folk customs in some ancient village suffered different degrees of damage, where part of ancient villages is facing the danger of collapse or extinction. As a result, the serious situation of protecting and developing ancient villages is in the urgent need of the close attention of the government and even the whole society. It should be done without delay to exactly grasp the development lifeline of ancient villages and also strengthen the protection and development of ancient dwellings.Longyan is a famous historical and cultural city which is known as "the red revolution land in Minxi, western Fujian". Moreover it's one of the Start Point of Long March. There are many ancient villages here, notably Longyan Zhongchuan ancient village, Liancheng Peitian ancient village and Zhuguan ancient village.Based on the research of the development and protection of ancient villages in Longyan's seven counties (city, district) and through field investigation and research, as well as material collection, this paper focus majorly on the measures, results and current difficulties and problems during the development and protection of local ancient villages and dwellings. At the same time, case study was carried out in Zhuguan ancient villages. Through the aspects of field study and investigation on its natural heritage, analysis on the specialty and values of its cultural environment and current development and results, plus discussions on reasonable ways of protection, reference significances were obtained. With the current principles of development and protection of ancient villages and dwellings in non-Hakka regions of Longyan city, governmental duties and must-grip-urgently policies for these villages to grow into characteristic towns, this paper aims at exploring more effective ways of protection to better develop and utilize their values, ultimately providing a scientific reference for other ancient villages and dwellings.
