Hufei's Translation Of Orphan Train From The Perspective Of Nida's Functional Equivalence

Christina Baker Kline, one of the most popular writers, attracts wide attention among European and American readers. Her book Orphan Train opens a hidden chapter of American history, making readers reflect on the system of family foster care in today's society. The hopeless and painful experience of two protagonists offers readers strength to face difficulties in real life. So far, the translations of this book are rare, which is one of reasons why the author endeavors to do some research on Hufei's translation in order that those who intend to translate this book and similar literature could analyze the translation strategies she used in translation for reference and benefit from them.Hufei's translation of Christina Baker Kline's Orphan Train is analyzed from the perspective of Nida's functional equivalence in various aspects. As the original work has been so influential in the literary field and Hufei's translation, the first translation in China, is favored by most of Chinese readers, so it is really a good case to study how Nida's functional equivalence works in this translation. The translation is analyzed at lexical, syntactic, rhetorical, cultural and stylistic level. Firstly, from the perspective of reader's response and new theory of language and translation put forward by Nida in the functional equivalence, the author attempts to study how Hufei achieves functional equivalence, especially in the respect of reader's response. Secondly, the author focuses on how Hufei handles culture-loaded words and expressions through cultural transplantation in her translation. Finally, the author takes some examples to show the stylistic equivalence in Hufei's translation. The successful practice of her translation should be studied by other Chinese scholars on literary translation so that they can produce more excellent translations of foreign outstanding works.
