A Report On The Translation Of "Train"

This report,taking the short story “Train” written by Alice Munro as example,with the combination of Functional Equivalence Theory and the short story's translation,aims at illustrating how the theory helps the translator choose appropriate translation strategies to present a better translated text.Functional Equivalence Theory,proposed by Eugene A.Nida who is known as the “father of modern translation theory”,emphasizes reproducing the closest natural equivalent of the source-language message,playing an important role in guiding stories' translation.This report includes five chapters.Chapter One is task description briefly introducing the short story “Train”,its author Alice Munro and its features.Chapter Two is process description including preparing,translating and proofreading.Chapter Three is theoretical framework making a brief introduction to Eugene A.Nida,his Functional Equivalence theory and its application to the short story's translation.Chapter Four,as the main body,with examples,elaborates translation strategies and explains the application of Functional Equivalence Theory to the translation practice,namely,discussing annotation,conversion and purposeful adjustment at lexical level,focusing on the translation of long sentences and passive voices at syntactic level and putting emphasis on conjunctions,pronouns and time expressions to present a coherent natural translation at textual level.Chapter Five concludes the guidance of Functional Equivalence Theory to the story's translation and points out the gains as well as the limitations of the translation practice.
