| Cohesion,as important means to achieve contextual coherence,is one of the essential requirements of discourse.The only way to grasp the discourse information efficiently is to apply cohesive devices in discourse.Since Halliday & Hasan published Cohesion in English in 1976,many scholars at home and abroad have studied cohesion theory and achieved fruitful results.However,cohesive features and processing methods vary from discourse of different types.As one of the types of discourse,news discourse has its own linguistic features.Based on Halliday and Hasan's cohesion theory,this thesis takes English news discourse as the research object,aiming to explore how to use effective cohesive means to organize English news discourse through the a concrete analysis of the cohesive devices in English news discourse.The whole thesis can be divided into five chapters.Chapter 1 makes a brief introduction to the research and brings out the most essential points in the thesis.Chapter 2 elaborates the relevant studies on functional linguistic theory,cohesion theory and news discourse,laying a theoretical foundation for the following analysis.Chapter 3,based on the news reports collected from different news media,conducts an analytic research on the application of cohesive devices in news reports from functional linguistic perspective.Chapter 4 summarizes the corresponding devices of cohesion in English news discourse grammatical and lexical devices and points out the restricting factors of the use of news discourse cohesion are analyzed.Chapter 5draws a conclusion to the whole thesis.After an analytic research on different kinds of English news reports,it is evidently shown that cohesion theory is widely and frequently used in English news discourse.According to the analysis,it can also be concluded that the most common cohesive devices are grammatical device,including reference and conjunction.To compare with,ellipsis and substitution are relatively rarely seen in English news discourse.In order to achieve the cohesion of English news discourse,it is necessary and feasible to conduct some lexical devices(reiteration and collocation)and grammatical devices(reference,substitution and ellipsis and conjunction,etc.)In general,cohesion theory plays an important role in aspects of textual cohesion and coherence,discourse integrity research,the relationship between discourse and context,etc.Because of this,it also inspires many scholars to conduct further researches to promote the development of the cohesion theory.Study of cohesion theory in stylistics,translation and journalism is widely used,among which study of cohesion theory in the field of journalism is the core concept in this thesis,and it has cultivated our ability of discourse analysis and logical thinking. |
