Research On The Chinese Translation Of Energy Reports Based On Cohesion Theory

The translation project in this report is derived from certain chapters of Market Report Series: Oil 2017,which mainly introduces the changing trend of the global oil market in the next five years.As the energy report belonging to information text,the translation of such text should pay attention to the accurate information transmission,but the language logic of translation.While the discourse cohesion theory put forward by Halliday and Hassen provides a new idea to solve the accuracy and logic of energy report text translation.This report summarizes the discourse cohesion theory and its current study situation at first.Then it explains the cohesion differences between Chinese and English.Finally,it adopts case study method to explore translation skills which can deal with cohesion devices properly,which can make the translation in line with the Chinese expression patterns and largely get to equivalent translation,combined with specific translation examples.The writer finds that such energy reports are featured with professional language,compact structure and complex semantic relation.Notably,reference cohesion,substitution and omission cohesion and connection are three prominent devices.Therefore,according to cohesion features,and cohesion differences between Chinese and English,the writer applies certain translation skills as reduction,addition and ellipsis.Specifically,as for referential cohesion,the writer adopts reduction or ellipsis on the cohesion degree,so as to avoid ambiguity and illogical;as for substitution and omission cohesion,due to lexical diversity between Chinese and English,the writer adopts reduction and addition to ensure its translation conform to Chinese expressions;for connection,the writer adopts addition to make the logic clearer as possible and reduce readers' reading pressure.In summary,the discourse cohesion theory plays a guiding role in the Chinese translation of energy report texts.When translating such texts,translators should payattention to their cohesion devices applied,and flexibly adopt translation skills to realize the accuracy and logic of their translation.
