| Shuo Wen Jie Zi Zhuan Yun Pu and Daxu Fanqie preserve the Qieyu of Lizhou’s Qieyun and Sunmian’s Tangyun to a certain extent.Comparing the Qieyu of Zhuan Yun Pu with Daxu Fanqie, although it is apparent that Zhuan Yun Pu and Daxu Fanqie inherited the phonetic system of Qieyun used by Lufayan, the contents of these two books are not exactly equal. Analysing differences in Qieyu between Zhuan Yun Pu and Daxu Faqie provides insight into the phonetic change staking place at the time they were written. Lizhou’s Qieyun and Sunmian’s Tangyun were both completed during the Middle of the Tang dynasty, when the phonetic system used in Qieyun was still in a state of constant change, however many important medieval phonetic rules were being formed during this period. This paper therefore compares the differences between the two texts from the perspectives of initials, vowels and tone. Through analysis of the differences between the two books’ Fanqie, and of the historical evolution of phonetics during that period, this paper explores the reasons for the differences between Zhuanyunpu’s Qieyu and Daxu Fanqie, and the evolution of the actual spoken voice that lies behind these differences. |
