With the deepening of globalization, reform and opening-up,China has been more actively communicating with other countries and regions, during which interpreters play a significant role. There have been numerous publications on the consecutive interpretation of monographs, but there is not much literature which takes the text of a speech as an example to discuss difficulties of English-Chinese speech Interpreting and their specific strategies.Hence,it deserves our increasing attention to research on these aspects.Speech Interpreting aims to make the source language—English, which is spoken by the conference speaker, understood by Chinese audience, therefore to reach the goal of mutual communication. This is in line with the propositions of Relevance Theory:translation is a kind of communicative and cognitive activity with the purpose of conveying communicative meaning. Therefore,Relevance Theory can provide theoretical guidance for the study of the English-Chinese Speech Interpreting. This thesis, guided by Relevance Theory, takes the speech of Chris Hadfield at"2014 TED Conference" as an example to discuss the appropriate interpreting strategies. It includes four chapters.Chapter One introduces the background and current situation of interpreting studies, and points out the significance, contents and main structures of the thesis. In view of the particularity of interpreting process itself,Chapter Two analyzes the features of consecutive interpreting. On top of that,it continues to discuss the difficulties in speech interpreting such as language barriers and cultural differences.Chapter Three explains the theoretical framework of Relevance Theory and its application in the study of speech interpreting. The author first introduces concepts of ostensive-inferential process, context and optimal relevance and then offers possible solutions from the aspects of preparation, comprehension and reproduction when the interpreter is faced with sudden challenges during the process of interpreting.Chapter Four focuses on the study of the interpreting strategies of Chris Hadfield's speech at "2014 TED Conference".The author makes an analysis on her preparation work before the conference, and her attempts to apply Relevance Theory to the solution of problems posed by lingual and cultural differences. An Interpreter should give full play to her initiative and adopt strategies like(1)syntactic linearity,(2)interpretation,(3)deletion,(4)transformation,and(5)creative translation according to the specific situation that arises. Therefore, cross cultural communications can be achieved.Interpreters must play their role as a bridge and take lingual and cultural factors into full consideration in intercultural communication.Relevance Theory can help interpreters make effective use of different strategies to improve the quality and foster the development of interpreting.
