| The theory of the end of art is one of the most popular terms in the process of development in art after modernism,and also one of the most misunderstood.The German art historian Hans Belting and the American art philosopher Arthur C.Danto almost at the same time come up with the topic of the end of art in 1980s,they try to prove that the art narrative and art history narrative of the modern linear progressive style have ended because of the change of art after modernism.Danto focuses on the works of art on the philosophical level and in Hegel’s influences he concludes that the aim of art will go to philosophy in the final.Belting aims to show the possibility of open style writing in the history of art,and emphasizes that the method of grand narrative in the history of art has come to an end.Although the end of art is vigorously discussed and frequently cited once being put forth,the topic has not been properly understood andthoroughly interpreted.The concept of the third art historyand global art from Belting can not provethe end of art,neither do theconcept of artworld and the style matrix from Danto.There is a certain continuity between modernism and postmodernismexcept the discrepancies,and there is a close relationship between them inevitably.The value of art is in its continuous creation and the spirit of self-examination.Art has its own imagination,creativity,subjectivity,autonomy and reflective thinking.It is a kind of self-resistance and a thinkingof equality and freedom in practice.This paper based on the close reading of Belting’s and Danto’s writings,aims tomake a new judge and reinspection between the two men’s theories,with the method of combining the meaningful discussionsof modern art and postmodern art and the exploration of the essence in art.It draws the following conclusions:the development of the times and social transformation will inevitably lead to the change of the art form,and the theory of the end of art is just a curry favour by claptrap via saying the past has died.Becauseboth Belting and Danto merelyexplain the change of art after modernism,but they give no further research on the essence and trend of the art and the art history after modernism.The art in the past never completely die,and itabsolutelywill continue to exist.The end of art study is conducive to the guidance of both theory and practice of Chinese contemporary art,and its development should be focusing on the local art consciousness and the subjective establishment. |
