Tragedy is the conflicts between the demands of the tragic characters) and the reality that those demands cannot be fulfilled, which destroys the tragic character(s) or their ideal, etc. Meanwhile, the characters) are sure to protest. Tragedy is an all-around dramatic art, which is mainly characterized with tragic aesthetic feeling, at the same time, with sublimity, grace and comedy, etc.The paper starts from the controversy: "Is there tragedy in China?" It argues for the existence of tragedy in China. The happy ending of Chinese classical drama, which has been criticized, is taken as the major argument that there is no tragedy in China. After the comparison of the western and Chinese drama ending, the paper points out that there is essential difference between what Aristotle said "double ending" and the happy ending of Chinese classical drama, which is a tragic one. Under the influence of western and Chinese traditional culture, there is different tendency between western and Chinese tragic spirit. The different purports of tragic spirits under different cultural context are reflected by the tragic character(s), the inherent drive of the tragic conflicts. Western tragic spirits prefer philosophical object thought. It's a tragedy of the pursuit of truth. On the contrary, Chinese classical tragedy spirits prefer the tragedy of goodness and beauty, the end-result of which is ethic. Western and Chinese tragedy ending with different aesthetic characteristics just meets the different demands of tragedy spirits between them.
