Abstract/Summary:
Hermeneutics is an ancient science. In ancient times,it was believed to be related with comprehension, translation and interpretation skills. In modern times,it has gradually been incorporated into the philosophical category as epistemology.Ricoeur’ s textual hermeneutics is merged of phenomenology, structuralism and psychoanalysis etc.Paul Ricoeur is regarded as a conciliatory gesture on the stage of philosophy, whose hermeneutics plays an important role in the development of modern hermeneutical theory.Paul Ricoeur’ s text hermeneutics tries to bridge the traditional opposition between the natural sciences and the humanity sciences, the methodological hermeneutics and ontological hermeneutics. This bridge depends on his understanding or the concept of text, the concept of metaphor,as well as the relationship between the reader and the text.Ricoeur provides with his definition of text, which refers to any discourse fixed by writing. Thus the text is not only just literature, but also can be extended to the field of symbolic, unconscious and even social, political and religious area.In his opinion, metaphor is not only the object of rhetoric as semantic words, but an object of existentialism. The interpretation of metaphor comes from the conflict meanings of the words. And readers who read a text have to overcome the distanciation of the text and appropriate it.Readers will get new understandings of his or her life through reading.Ricoeur applied his text hermeneutics into the interpretation of Bible. In his view, the interpretation of the Bilble can not be limited to traditional and rhetoric analysis. We should read the Bible through the lens of metaphor and intertextuality.Readers can achieve self-life transformation through textual reading. Therefore, the essay put that the textual hermeneutics of Ricoeur bridges the gap between the" method" and the "existence".
