A Study On The Code-switching In Mr.Zhou Live Show From The Perspective Of Adaptation Model

As one of most common linguistic phenomena in the process of linguistic contact,code-switching has attracted a lot of attention from the scholars of various research fields.In the past twenty years,pragmatic study has made considerable progress.So since the 1980 s,it has become a new trend for studying code-switching from the perspective of pragmatics.In 1999,Jef Verschueren(1999)put forward the language adaptation theory.As a theory with strong explanatory power and inclusiveness,Yu Guodong(2004)abstracted the essence and proposed Adaptation Model for code-switching study.Mr.Zhou Live Show is an entertainment program which adopts solo talk show as the performance form.It takes the American talk show Tonight Show as model,giving some discussions about the hot issues in the society.For the popularity of the discussing topics and the sharp,humorous hosting style of Zhou,Mr.Zhou Live Show once in 2014 won the highest audience rating among the similar programs.As a solo talk show,in the program,the host Zhou Libo uses a lot of language skills to arouse the interest of the audience.Code-switching is one of his skills in language he adopts.This thesis adopts a pragmatic perspective,using the Adaptation Model for code-switching of Yu Guodong as the theoretical framework to do a comprehensive and systematic analysis on code-switching in Mr.Zhou Live Show.In the process of study,the qualitative study is employed as the main research methodology while some statistical analysis is also made.After reading the related literature,it is found that,by now,there have been many studies about the Mr.Zhou Live Show from the perspective of linguistics.But most of the linguistic researches focus on the figures of speech employed by the host,for example,the use of the irony,pun,sarcasm of the host,or the humorous effect of host's language.Some of the researches are done from the perspective of code-switching,but most of them only study how the speakers switch between different languages: from Chinese to English,while neglecting the code-switching of other types.So this thesis is an attempt to give the code-switching in Mr.Zhou Live Show a systematic and comprehensive description—not only studying the code-switching between two languages,but also including the code-switching between different dialects,different styles etc.This thesis mainly consists of three parts.The main contents are as below:The first part is introduction.In this part,the background of the study,the study status of the research,the research methodology and the research objective are discussed.The second part is the body part of this thesis which includes four chapters.Chapter I is the literature review.In this section,the definitions of some terminologies which are involved in this thesis and the theoretical framework:Verschueren's adaptation theory and Yu Guodong's Adaptation Model are presented.Besides,some characteristics of the talk show,and the language features of Hai Pai Qing Kou are also introduced.In the following three chapters,the code-switching in Mr.Zhou Live Show are analyzed from three different dimensions according to the theory of Adaptation Model.These three chapters are the main description part of this thesis.The author chooses 35 episodes of the program from 2013-2015 as the data source,and selects the code-switching used by the host.In Chapter II,it mainly describes the code-switching in Mr.Zhou Live Show as adaptation to social conventions.The subsections include filling the linguistic gap,remaining the language authenticity and keeping the language effects.The structure of Chapter III and Chapter IV is similar with Chapter II.They study the code-switching in Mr.Zhou Live Show from the other two dimensions of code-switching:code-switching as the adaptation to social conventions and code-switching as the adaptation to psychological motivations.In these three chapters,the author chooses the examples of code-switching and analyzes the types of these code-switching.Besides,the motivations and the expressing effects of these code-switching are demonstrated.The last part is the conclusion part of this thesis.The summary is made after the analysis of various kinds of code-switching in Mr.Zhou Live Show.Meanwhile,answers are provided to the three questions which are put forward in the first part of this thesis.Besides,the limitations of this study is put forward.Some suggestions are given for the further study in this field.Starting from the pragmatic perspective,this thesis uses the examples to illustrate the effectiveness and scentificity of Yu Guodong's Adaptation Model(2010).It does an analysis on the code-switching from Mr.Zhou Live Show which is closely related to thedaily life of common people.This thesis establishes a bridge between code-switching and the entertainment shows.It may enlighten the understanding of the code-switching in talk shows and improve the language skills of this kind of TV program.
