A Report On The C-E Translation Of China's Local Conditions And Customs(Excerpts) From The Perspective Of Communicative Translation Theory

With the rapid development of globalization,China is getting more and more popular all around the world.The translation of cultural texts plays an important role in the communication and exchange between China and foreign countries.Therefore,a good translation of this kind of cultural texts is necessary and significant.The author of this thesis tried to translate parts of the book China's Local Conditions and Customs.The book contains three parts,including China's customs,Chinese families and the psychology of the Chinese.And in the first part,it includes three small parts,that is,Chinese food,Chinese residential buildings and Chinese traditional costume culture.And what the author has translated is the part about Chinese food.The source text mainly contains a lot of Chinese poetry,historical events,old sayings which are the precious heritage of China,and a lot of making methods of dishes are introduced in this part.This thesis is a report on the author's translation practice of the book China's Local Conditions and Customs under the guidance of Peter Newmark's Communicative Translation Theory.Firstly,the author makes detailed observation about relevant translation methods and strategies especially borrowed from Peter Newmark's Communicative Translation Theory.Secondly,the author analyzes the main different characteristics of Chinese and English cultural texts and the reasons in this thesis.Also,she lists some common difficulties faced in the translation practice,such as translation of names of some dishes,translation of culture-loaded words and translation of Chinese poetry quotation.Thirdly,based on several examples chosen from the source text,she discusses and digs out the strategies which are chosen as the main methods according to the case study of the difficulties,such as literal translation and free translation,transliteration plus annotation,amplification and so on.This thesis is a good attempt for the use of some common translation strategies in the translation practice of China's Local Conditions and Customs under the guidance of Peter Newmark's Communicative Translation Theory.Meanwhile,it can propose some useful reference to improve the quality of related translation in the future studies.
