This report is about my translation experience. When I was in school,I had the chance to translate Sasaki Toshinao's book which name is The age of curation-the revolution of the connection between intelligence,The book talks about the connection between the intelligence in the internet. The theme of the book is very timely and it's content includes a lot of phenomenon which happens nowadays. Not like the literature, the concept in the The age of curation-the revolution of the connection between intelligence needs to be translated definitely so that readers can understand it.So I was looking for a translation theory which can be the guidance of my translation practice.By taking a translation theory as my guidance,I can translate the book better. Finally I choose Baker's equivalence theory as my guidance.Baker discusses the equivalence of translation from word level to pragmatic level.Baker also gives specific strategy which can be used in translation practice.Be compared with these translation theories so far,Baker's equivalence theory is more based on modern linguistic theories and gives specific strategies.Maybe Baker's strategies are not perfect. But a specific guidance will contribute a stable translation to the translation practice. This report is a summary of using Baker's equivalence theory. As the aim of the practice is to check the possibility of using Baker's specific translation strategy to make sure the quality of translation stable,I did not use every level's equivalence theory but the word level. The report has three parts. In chapter 1,I will introduce Baker's equivalence theory.Baker's translation theory starts from linguistic view. And Baker's equivalence theory includes word level, above word level, grammatical equivalence, textual level, pragmatic level. This systematic theory contributes a lot to translation practice. Then I will take a look at the words in Sasaki's book.Since Sasaki's book is not a literature book,it is critical to translate it specifically.Sasaki's book's theme is also very timely and focuses on the phenomenon nowadays. So it is necessary to take Baker's theory as the guidance. In chapter 2,I will use specific examples to show how to use Baker's theory in practice and check if the theory is good enough to cover the book.About the words in Sasaki's book, there are two main styles. One is from English words, like "biotope","noise","check in" etc.Another type is Japanese word, for example "takotsuboka".According to Baker's theory, the equivalence translation of these words need to be propositionally correct. In chapter 3,I will discuss the shortage of Baker's equivalence theory.By using Baker's word level equivalence theory,it can not cover some case in practice. We need to consider the social background, cultural difference, and the behavior. In other words,we need to consider some effects above linguistic theory.
