Roman Valerievich Senchin is a contemporary Russian novelist and literary critic.By depicting the loss of life motivation of an ordinary family that retreated from the city to the countryside, the novel The Eltyshevs shows the reality and brutality in rural life, reflecting the human vice.Although Senchin is considered as a representative figure of the new generation writers in Russia, there are few studies on him in China. The 2011 Gorky Literary Prize winner,The Eltyshevs, also lacks attention.Based on literary and stylistic theories, and with the help of text analysis, this study systematically analyzes the thematic and stylistic features of the novel The Eltyshevs. The originality of this thesis lies in the fact that it comprehensively studies the novel's features in the theme, characterization and artistic expression,in order to understand Roman Senchin's style of literary creation and literature appeals. The introduction addresses the object, purpose, main tasks, methodology and innovative points of this thesis. It sets forth the theoretical and practical significance and provides a glance at the structure of this thesis.Chapter One looks at how Senchin created the work. This chapter summarizes the plot and the research status quo of the novel The Eltyshevs, presents the development of the "village prose",and explains the aesthetic function and"multi-style" of the literary style.Chapter Two expounds the theme "villiage" of the novel, analyzing the maincharacters. The novel The Eltyshevs describes how people are consumed and enslaved by the environment. It discusses the degradation in terms of both material and spiritual life, revealing despair of contemporary Russian villages.A social novel,The Eltyshevs, centers on rural and famers' issues. It touches upon a number of pressing problems in modern Russian society, including educational, medical and religious problems. The images of the Eltyshev couple differ greatly from the images of the defender of the village, nature and humanity, which is often found in the traditional "villiage prose".Nicholas quickly conformed to the surrounding people,in whom morality perished, and set himself on the path to ruin.Valentina's life,on the other hand, reflects further despair. She changed from an educated librarian, the most courageous, reasonable and responsible member of the family,to a person with spiritual impoverishment. She perished compromising with the environment.Artem, the elder son of the Eltyshev couple,is a new-period representative of "the superfluous man",who was addicted to daydreams and always evaded responsibility. He could not change the environment nor fulfil himself.Denis, the younger son,was a seemingly reliable, responsible and capable young man,but it turned out that he was just a false hope of the family. The lack of morality and responsibility made him the last straw to destroy the whole family.Chapter Three analyzes the use of stylistic vocabulary, the figure of speech and detail descriptions in the novel.Additionally,it makes a study of the whole novel by analyzing the perspective structure. The use of a large number of stylistic vocabulary, which contains colloquialism, vulgarism, dialecticism and jargon, highlights the characters' language features. It also corresponds to the principle of the direction "new realism".Moreover, the frequency of these words hints at the characters' life degradation and promotes the development of the novel's plot line. From the angle of the figure of speech, the novel not only used the simple metaphor to describe the characters' appearances, activities and environment, but also the extended metaphor, describing the characters' psychology. This contributes to the expressiveness of the language in the aspect of creating characters' images and building up the theatrical atmosphere. The novel The Eltyshevs features a variety of detail descriptions, making this novel truthful and readable. This shows the author's writing principles and aesthetic pursuit. The overall study of the novel from the angle of the perspective structure contributes to revealing the "the image of the author".From the angle of time-perspective,the characters' memories in chapters ?,?,? clearly disrupt the chronology of the novel, and these three chapters are formally repeated. Each character occupies a chapter and each chapter starts with the character's memory. Then it turns to the the chronological narrative and then dialogues move the plot forward. All the three chapters consist of monologues and dialogues. In analyzing the psychological perspective,it is observed that the author used internal and external descriptions. Both descriptions are the creative strategies to shape the images of the characters. In the view of the language pespective, special attention is paid to the replacement of free indirect speech and direct speech in the novel. This method brings together the language levels of the characters and the author. It enriches and enlivens the forms of expression.Through the evaluation perspective, the author and other characters can evaluate the same character from different sides, which helps readers delvelop more comprehensive understanding of the character. The Conclusion sumarizes the main points of this thesis. In the novel The Eltyshevs Senchin looks at the material scarcity, moral corruption and the spirit of barren situation of current Russian rural areas, pointing out how the people are enslaved by the environment.Considering Senchin's emphasis on the visible and perceptible reality, this study discovered that Senchin records reality by rich means of expression in his novel and increases the magnitude of the critique of reality.
