A Comparative Study On Teaching Styles Of Native English Speaker Teachers And Chinese English Teachers In Universities

In order to reveal the teaching styles foreign English teachers and Chinese English teachers use in English teaching in Chinese universities, and to have a better understanding and interpretation of the teaching styles that foreign English teachers and Chinese English teachers use in Chinese universities, the author conducted a survey of which the contents are about what teaching styles foreign English teachers would love to choose and what teaching styles Chinese English teachers would prefer. And identify whether the teaching styles foreign English teachers and Chinese English teachers use are significant different.Questionnaires and interviews are the main methods used in this survey. Questionnaire consists of 44 English teachers (21 foreign English teachers and 23 Chinese English teachers),to control the irrelevant variables, teachers' average age is about 30 years old, most teachers have more than five years of teaching experience. Questionnaire is adapted from TSTI (Thinking Styles in Teaching Inventory) which is designed by an American psychologist Sternberg, R. J. The adapted questionnaire consists of four teaching styles, they are liberal, conservative, global and local. Questionnaires are processed by SPSS and the author also did the independent sample T-test. In order to make the results more reliable, the author conducted an interview, the interviewees are four teachers (choose two from each group).We found the following conclusions through this study:Chinese English teachers and foreign English teachers are inclined to different teaching styles, foreign English teachers prefer global and liberal teaching styles. And Chinese English teachers prefer local and conservative teaching styles.
