Exploring The English Translation Of The Key Concepts In Chinese Thought And Culture

All countries and peoples have their own systems of thought,culture,and discourse in the era of cultural diversity and multiple discourse today,all of them should have their place in the civilization and discourse systems of the world.They all deserve due respect.The concepts in thought and culture of a country and its people are naturally the most essential part of their discourse.By "key concepts in Chinese thought and culture" we mean concepts and key words or phrases the Chinese people have created which are fundamentally pertinent to Chinese philosophy,humanistic spirit,way of thinking,and values.However,the English translation of Chinese culture is very difficult.The special terms that precipitated in the long-term use and communication are often the difficult to overcome obstacles in the translation.The translator's choice of translation strategies and language expression is influenced by the internal factors(linguistic context)and external factors(situational context and cultural context).The report attempts to explain and analyze the choice of translation strategies in translating concepts in Chinese thought and culture from the perspective of contextual adaptation.In this report,under the guidance of contextual adaptation theory,through the comparison and analysis of some representative cultural concepts'translation the author reconstructs the process of the translator's selection and discusses how the context influences and guides the choice of translation strategies in the process of translation from three aspects of linguistic context,situational context and cultural context adaptation.The report shows that the application of contextual adaptation theory to the translation study of the concepts in Chinese thought and culture is not only helpful to explore the influence of context factors such as language,situation and culture on the translation,but also helpful to discuss the translator's transformation of context as the basis of translation selection,and to realize the dynamic adaptation process of translation context.It is also of guiding value to the translator's strategy selection in translation.The author hopes to help other translators understand the importance of context analysis and establish a high degree of context awareness through this report.The author also hopes that the exploration of the best translation practice could provide some inspirations for other translators in the translation of such concepts in Chinese thought and culture,hence contributing to the campaign"Chinese Culture Going Global".
