A Report On Translation Of Culture-specific Items In Langtuteng Based On Eco-Translatology

With an increasing exchange among China and foreign countries,westerners show a growing curiosity about China with a long civilization.It is a best way to know China through literature which reflects the distinctive culture and the special social flavor.Langtuteng attracts readers with its unique viewpoints and themes,including culture-specific items with Chinese characteristics,which shows the special period and Chinese expression features.Some information related to Chinese culture was omitted in Goldblatt's version,which fails to present Chinese culture.Therefore,it is necessary to translate the culture-specific items for the purpose of disseminating true culture deeply rooted in China,instead of for the sake of market profits.This is the reason why the author chose to translate the omitted contents by Goldblatt.The reason for the translation conforms to the principle of Eco-Translatology.Eco-Translatology believes translation is influenced by eco-translational environment.It is the eco-environment that plays an essential role in a translator's choice in terms of what to translate and what to omit.Translators from different cultures are influenced by different eco-translational eco-environments,which decides the translation strategies adopted by different translators.Different translations are complementary,thus they can together display the whole story that the author intends to unfold to readers.Eco-Translatology can justify the choice of translating Langtuteng.Culture-specific items related to social culture and linguistic culture abound in the omitted parts in Chapter 6,so they are taken as examples for the exploratioin of the translation strategies and methods.Specifically speaking,translation strategies adopted in the thesis include Foreignization and Domestication according to actual needs in the context.The conclusion of the thesis is that for the purpose of disseminating Chinese culture and presenting it as much as possible,the combination of Foreignization and Domestication should be employed to translate the culture-specific items associated with society and linguistics.Meanwhile,the readability and acceptability of the translation should not be ignored for the benefit of the target readers.
